Khmer is the national language of Cambodia, spoken there by over 10 million people. There are also about one million speakers in Vietnam and 750,000 in Thailand. It is a member of the Mon-Khmer family of languages.
Khmer was the language of the great Khmer empire which ruled Southeast Asia from the 10th to the 14th centuries. The Khmer script evolved out of an ancient script called Pallava which was ultimately derived from the Brahmi script of India. It later served as the basis of the Thai alphabet, which was invented in the 13th century
