Global Test of English Communication (GTEC) — Measure speaking, listening, reading and writing online

The GTEC is an online business-related English proficiency test that assesses up to four language skills — speaking, listening, reading and writing — or any combination of two. The GETC was developed by Berlitz in association with Benesse Corporation. Using sophisticated technology, the GTEC quickly and accurately measures English proficiency online and provides results with valuable information about an individual’s ability to communicate in English within a business environment.

GTEC Corporate Test Editions

GTEC Corporate Test Editions offer companies the convenience of assessing their employees’ English proficiency via the Web, whenever and wherever they choose. The assessments are available in four configurations which give organizations the flexibility to select assessments according to the specific language skills that are most relevant to their situation.

  • 4-Skill Test: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing — Test length is 80 minutes and results turnaround is 2 weeks
  • 2-Skill Test: Listening and Reading — Test length is 40 minutes and results turnaround is immediate
  • 2-Skill Test: Speaking and Listening — Test length is 40 minutes and results turnaround is 2 weeks
  • 2-Skill Test: Reading and Writing — Test length is 40 minutes and results turnaround is 2 weeks

GTEC Technical Requirements

System Requirements: Windows PC with Internet access running Windows 2000 or XP. (Currently not available for Apple computers)

  • Application Requirements: Microsoft Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher Macromedia Flash Player 6.0 or higher Ogg Vorbis CODEC for MSACM. (These are all available as freeware through GTEC portals.)
  • Internet Requirements: Browser: Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. Download speed: 500 Kbps or faster. Upload speed: 300 Kbps or faster
  • PC Requirements: CPU: 800 MHz Pentium-class processor or equivalent. Memory: 128 MB of RAM. Display/Video Card: High Color (64,536 colors) or better, XVGA (1024 x 768 pixels) or better. Sound Card: 16-bit sound card. Sound I/O Device: Speaker/headphone, microphone
